WIELAND FZG
The FZG (Forschungsstelle für Zahnräder und Getriebebau) developed various test methods that focus on scuffing load or wear characteristics, as well as pitting or micropitting phenomena on the teeth of gears. The FZG gear test is a four-square, power-circulating rig that drives a lubricated standardized spur-gear pair through stepwise “load stages”. The gears are designed to permit an accelerated stress test, to compare lubricants quickly.
Various standards (ISO 14635-1 (method A/8,3/90) for scuffing, and legacy DIN 51354 procedures, ASTM D5182 visual scuffing load-stage ) are commonly used today.
Variations are possible to probe for low velocity wear resistance or micropitting tendency, using defined gear sets.
FZG testing screens and ranks industrial gear oils, axle and manual-transmission fluids by their load-carrying capacity and failure onset (scuffing, pitting/micropitting), providing a practical, component-level accelerated assessment before field trials.
